Securing Copyright Permissions

YES! It may be a pain but it's absolutely necessary. Honor the composers whose work you are utilizing and do the right thing!

  • Music arrangements that require copyright permission MUST be properly licensed before beginning the writing or purchasing process.
  • Parties who do not secure copyright permission may be sued by copyright holders.
  • Many competitive circuits including Bands of America, some state circuits, etc. Require documentation of licensing to be submitted.
  • Legally, the ensemble director is required to obtain the license on behalf of the performing ensemble - Hylton Music Design can help guide you each step of the way.
  • Fees must be covered on behalf of the performing ensemble; the contracted show rate does not include copyright fees.
  • Fees can be from $0 to as high as $1200 to license a single song. However, most fall in the range of $180-600 per piece.
  • Copyright holders set their own fees and fees can change year to year or even license to license at the copyright holder’s discretion.
  • We have several shows with minimal or no copyright licensing needed. Contact us for details.
  • The quickest and easiest way is to use a third party service such as www.tresonamusic.com to act as the middleman between you, the copyright holder, and the arranger. The downside is that there are extra fees and more red tape involved.
  • Many copyright holders can be contacted directly through their website or publisher and licensing can be as easy as submitting a form and sending a check. This process may take a bit more work by the director(s) but

Customization

We can update literally anything about the music arrangements that’s needed, based on your specs/information provided in writing.

  • Update overall orchestration to match your group's size. We can make shows fit smaller ensembles really well!
  • Change solo instruments (e.g. make that clarinet solo a trumpet or flute or baritone, or a quartet, etc.).
  • Change number of parts/splits (I.e. 3 to 2 trumpet parts, 5 to 4 bass drums, etc.).
  • Change the ranges of specific instrument parts (I.e. lead trumpets stay under written G above staff…).
  • Make cuts to sections for pacing or overall timing.
  • Replace movements of music with new material.
  • Create new features/solos.
  • Add Narration, SFX.
  • Change the title/concept.
  • etc.

After choosing a show and viewing sample scores you'll completely mark up the score with any changes you'd like to make; you can also send us extra pages of notes about your ensemble and challenges you face. Send that information back to us and we implement everything you need.

Customization rates are based on hourly rates but also depend on complexity of work and turnaround timeline. Generally, rates range from $200-400 per show.

Yes! you can utilize our writers for customization OR you can purchase the notation (XML) files for $100 per movement.

  • Please note, HMD cannot guarantee the quality of the arrangements after you have made ‘in-house’ changes.
