This work draws on inspiration from Owen Clayton Condon’s Fractalia as performed by Third Coast Percussion as well as trying to find other sounds and ways to play percussion instruments. Muting of the bars with the performers hands, mallet dampening and dead strokes are all represented in this work. The beginning groove in 5/4 sets up the concept which is further explored in the other sections of the work. The slow section highlights the bass guitar player with a melody that sings over the top of the muted groove. The slow section then metric modulates the tempo into the third section of the piece which highlights the vibes playing dead strokes and a legato melody at the same time. It also features an energetic “drummy” section and extended technique on the vibes. The final section is a bookend of the beginning and ties up the muted concept.
